Terry and Michael go down town because they want to buy a CD player. They walk into one of the big stores on the main street and they are watched by one of the shop assistants. They both know they're being watched and can see the store security guard following them wherever they go. [Scene pauses and thought bubbles appear] (Terry) Just because I'm black, people think I'm a thief and involved in crime. (Michael) That security guard won't follow me - he'll think I'm a white boy. (Security Guard) Better keep an eye on this black kid - bet you he'll try to steal something. [Scene continues] This has happened before and makes them feel as though they have done something wrong. So they both decide to play a game with the security guard and split up and go down separate aisles. [Scene pauses and thought bubbles appear] (Terry) The security guard will follow me because I'm black. (Michael) I'll be able to get away here because they'll follow Terry. (Security Guard) Looks like they're splitting up - the black guys are usually the most desperate. [Scene continues] The security guard keeps a close watch on Terry, while Michael is left alone. Finally, Terry and Michael spot each other and head over to the electronics counter. [Scene pauses and thought bubbles appear] (Terry) They won't think I've got any money. (Michael) I bet I'll get served before Terry. (Assistant) I'll serve these others first - the black kid won't have any money anyway. [Scene continues] Terry gets to the counter first and the assistant serves other customers, then serves Michael, even though he arrived after Terry. Terry sees the security guard is still hovering around. So Terry puts his CD player on the counter and gets out his wallet. And the assistant is surprised when Terry pulls out the money to pay for the CD player.
