Teacher aide courses from the ACT

Australia’s most popular research-based teacher aide courses are now available in the ACT by distance learning.

Think you could be a teacher aide? ITAC now offer our popular research-based teacher aide courses to anyone living in or around the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Completing a teacher aide course in the ACT is the first step towards a long, stable and rewarding career in the ever-expanding education sector.

Teacher aides support students' learning, development and behaviour. They assist the teacher with logistical and operational tasks such as preparing activities, developing resources, cleaning, storing equipment, record keeping and many other tasks depending on the needs of the class or program.

In all states and territories of Australia, there are two nationally recognised qualifications for teacher aides. You will need to complete one of these teacher aide courses should you wish to seek employment in a school in the ACT. ITAC also offer a third program which we call the Teacher Aide Combo - our most popular course by far. A brief description of each course is below:

CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support

For students who intend to work in a mainstream classroom in an entry level position, this basic teacher aide course will enable you to work in most schools in the ACT. This is the introductory teacher aide course and it covers all of the standard yet effective teaching skills and strategies that school expect their support staff to implement each day.

Topics covered in the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support in the ACT include foundational instructional strategies such as prompting scaffolding and modelling. Students also learn basic behaviour management techniques such as low-key responses and supervision strategies.

This teacher aide course is best for high school students and individuals learning to speak English. Adult learners should enrol in one of the higher level courses in order to qualify to work with students with additional needs (which is 80% of all positions in schools).

CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support

Completing this advanced and higher-level teacher aide course will mean you exceed the minimum requirements for work as a teacher aide in most positions in the ACT. You will be able to work in mainstream classrooms as well as with students with additional needs. Graduates of this course will be able to competently and confidently support students with special needs including those with multiple disabilities and disorders, as well as comorbidities.

There is no need to complete the lower level Certificate III course before enrolling in the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support; the majority of students can go straight into this qualification, particularly adult learners who have experience with children (including their own).

We recommend the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support over the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support for most students as it provides the greatest level of employability and is not substantially more difficult than the lower level CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Eduction Support.

Teacher Aide Combo

Our flagship program, the teacher aide combo, is the most popular course we offer and is available to residents of the ACT area by online learning. Why complete 1 course when you can complete 2 courses in about the same amount of time (and for not much more in terms of cost)?

The combo is a great way to improve your resume and double your chances of finding work in your preferred school in the Australian Capital Territory. In fact, we have thousands of former students working in schools across Australia and most of them completed this teacher aide course.

Online mode, sometimes called distance or external learning, is the preferred mode for most of ITAC’s students who enrol from the ACT. As the leader in teacher aide training in Australia, we provide world-class resources and experience to all students - this includes e-learning modules, ebooks, audiobooks and free learner guides written by internationally recognised experts. We don’t just throw a pile of books your way – our students access a large array of videos, lectures and past webinars and can attend live weekly webinars.

Our students study the latest methods, strategies, techniques, skills and approaches that you won’t learn anywhere else. Only at ITAC do students study the core concepts that teachers learn at university such as effective questioning skills, formative assessment and enquiry-based learning.

You will also study more advanced skills that will make you an invaluable member of the school community – the most sought-after teacher aide in your school! This includes Cognitive Load theory, coping strategies and motivational strategies to name just a few - another reason for why our courses are the most popular teacher aide courses in Australia.

Once you have completed your teacher aide course in the ACT with a reputable provider such as ITAC, you could end up working in any number of schools in the ACT such as:

It's also worth noting at this point that the majority of schools employ large numbers of teacher aides. In fact, some schools, such as education centres for students with special needs, have more teacher aides than actual teachers. In other words, there is no doubt that there are plenty of opportunities out there for people in the ACT who have completed a reputable nationally recognised teacher aide course such as the CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support or the more advanced CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support.
